This Bengal Patachitra depicts Maa Durga as Mahishasurmardini, the fierce and radiant goddess who brings the eternal triumph of good over evil. The scene captures the moment of her cosmic battle with Mahishasura, the buffalo demon, where she stands astride her powerful lion, ten arms extended with celestial weapons bestowed by the gods. Each weapon — the trident, discus, sword, and bow — signifies divine strength united in her form, while her serene yet determined expression conveys both fierce destruction and motherly compassion.
Mahishasura, half-emerging in his buffalo form, falls beneath her strike, symbolizing the end of arrogance, darkness, and oppression. The bold outlines, sweeping curves, and luminous flat colors of the Kalighat-inspired Bengal style heighten the dramatic energy of the scene, while fine detailing in the ornaments and attire express devotion and artistry in equal measure.
In this painting, Maa Durga is not only the warrior goddess but also the universal mother. Around the Mother are depicted her divine children, who enrich the narrative with layers of symbolism. Ganesha, with his tranquil form, signifies wisdom, auspicious beginnings, and the removal of obstacles. Kartikeya, radiant with youthful vigor, embodies valor, discipline, and protection. Lakshmi, serene and poised, represents prosperity, wealth, and the blessings of abundance. Saraswati, luminous with her swan, signifies knowledge, learning, and the arts. Their presence alongside Durga is not incidental but deeply symbolic: they remind the viewer that the goddess is not only the destroyer of evil but also the nurturing mother who bestows upon the world the virtues of prosperity, wisdom, courage, and learning.
Painted in the Kalighat-inspired Bengal style, the work is marked by bold outlines, sweeping brushwork, and a vivid color palette. The fine detailing of attire, ornaments, and sacred vahanas imbues the painting with devotional richness, while the overall composition reflects both dramatic tension and spiritual serenity. This Patachitra is not only a retelling of myth but also a profound meditation on motherhood, power, and the sustaining harmony of the universe.

About the Artwork
Every artwork at Saanko is individually handcrafted to order by traditional folk artists whose skills have been passed down through generations. No two paintings are ever exactly the same.
